Transfer Credit for Prior Military & Career Experience

The Texas Institute for Teacher Education (TXITE) recognizes that military service, professional careers, and prior ACP experiences can provide valuable preparation for the teaching profession.

 

In accordance with Texas Administrative Code (TAC) §227.10(c)(5) and §228.35(a)(5), TXITE offers a structured process to evaluate and award transfer credit for prior experience that aligns with the Texas Teacher Standards and required educator competencies.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet the following conditions:

  • Be formally admitted to TXITE

  • Submit a portfolio of evidentiary artifacts demonstrating relevant experience

  • Demonstrate alignment with educator preparation competencies

Evaluation Process

All submitted materials are reviewed by the Program Director and Admissions Office using a standards-based rubric to determine:

  • Relevance to educator preparation

  • Depth and rigor of experience

  • Alignment with Texas Teacher Standards

  • Equivalency to required coursework or field experience

Qualifying Experience

Transfer credit may be awarded for experiences that demonstrate:

  • Instructional, training, or mentoring responsibilities

  • Leadership or supervisory roles

  • Experience designing or delivering training programs

  • Application of skills transferable to K–12 classroom environments

All experience must be:

  • Documented and verifiable

  • Comparable in scope and rigor to TXITE coursework or field experience

Acceptable Documentation

Applicants may submit the following artifacts:

  • Training Developed or Delivered
    Lesson plans, presentations, workshops, or mentoring activities

  • Leadership or Public Communication
    Briefings, reports, meetings, or presentations conducted

  • Program or Process Implementation
    Systems, procedures, or initiatives designed or managed

  • Military Awards and Commendations
    Medals, certificates, or formal recognition

  • Professional Certifications & Training
    Military training, leadership programs, continuing education, or technical certifications

  • ACP Transfer Forms (if applicable)

Credit Limits and Requirements

All transfer credit is subject to the following:

  • Maximum Transfer Credit: Up to 150 clock hours

  • Total Required Hours: 300 clock hours (TAC requirement)

  • TXITE Minimum Requirement:

    • At least 150 clock hours must be completed through TXITE

    • At least 30 hours of field-based experience must be completed at TXITE (unless waived by TEA)

  • Credit will not be awarded for state-mandated training (e.g., dyslexia, mental health) unless official TEA-recognized certificates are provided

Documentation and Recordkeeping

  • All submitted artifacts must be provided in digital format

  • Records will be maintained in the candidate’s file within Populi

  • Evaluation decisions, including rubric scores and rationale, are documented for compliance

Notification and Appeals

  • Candidates will receive a written decision within 10 business days

  • If credit is denied, candidates may:

    • Submit additional documentation

    • Request reconsideration

Final decisions are made by the Program Director in compliance with TAC §228.40(f).
