EARN A TEXAS STANDARD TEACHER CERTIFICATE IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS/GRADE LEVELS

THE TEXAS STATE BOARD FOR EDUCATOR CERTIFICATION TIMELINE

To be recommended for the Texas Standard Teacher Certificate, all teacher candidates must successfully complete the following:


 

1. Application and Acceptance for Admission

DATE: Anytime

 

2. All tasks and assessments in Modules 1-4. The enrollment fee is submitted at this point via electronic invoicing.

DATE: Upon program admission and within one year of enrollment


3. All tasks and assessments in Module 5, including 30 clock hours of school-based observations. Once Module 5 is complete, teacher candidates are approved to sit for the required TExES examinations (TExES Content and Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 #160 ). Information regarding certification exam requirements and registration is detailed under the

specific certification areas listed below. 

DATE: After Module 4 and within one year of enrollment


4. After passing the TExES exams, all teacher candidates select their preferred Professional Practicum route (14 weeks as a Teacher Assistant or One Academic Year as an Intern/Probationary Teacher of Record). Only one Professional Practicum is required. Field Supervisors, Principals, and Cooperating/Mentor Teachers must recommend the teacher candidate for the Texas Standard Teacher Certificate at the conclusion of the Professional Practicum. Monthly Professional Practicum fees are submitted during the Professional Practicum via electronic invoicing.

DATE: After passing TExES exams and within two years of enrollment

5. After completion of the Professional Practicum and all program fees, all teacher candidates complete a certification exit review with the program director prior to receiving a formal recommendation for the Texas Standard Teacher Certificate. TEA conducts a national background check on all certification applicants.

DATE: Upon successful completion of Professional Practicum

 

CORE SUBJECTS GRADES EC-6

Teach Art, PE, Health, Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, and English Language Arts/Reading

This certification area qualifies you to teach English Language Arts/Reading, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science, Fine Arts, Music, Health/Physical Education, Grades EC-6.  You must pass the
Core Subjects EC-6 #391, Science of Teaching Reading (STR) #293, and the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 #160 Exams to earn the Texas Standard Teacher Certificate. 

CORE SUBJECTS GRADES 4-8

Teach Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, and English Language Arts/Reading


This certification area qualifies you to teach English Language Arts/Reading, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science, Grades 4-8.  You must pass the Core Subjects 4-8 #211Science of Teaching Reading (STR) #293, and the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 #160 Exams to earn the Texas Standard Teacher Certificate.  

ELAR GRADES 4-8

Teach English Language Arts/Reading

This certification area qualifies you to teach English Language Arts/Reading, Grades 4-8.  You must pass the ELAR 4-8 #117Science of Teaching Reading (STR) #293, and the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 #160 Exams to earn the Texas Standard Teacher Certificate. Requires 12 semester credit hours in the content area.

ELAR/SOCIAL STUDIES GRADES 4-8

Teach English Language Arts/Reading and Social Studies

This certification area qualifies you to teach English Language Arts/Reading and Social Studies, Grades 4-8.  You must pass the ELAR 4-8 #113Science of Teaching Reading (STR) #293, and the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 #160 Exams to earn the Texas Standard Teacher Certificate. Requires 12 semester credit hours in the content area.

ELAR GRADES 7-12

Teach English Language Arts/Reading

This certification area qualifies you to teach English Language Arts/Reading, Grades 7-12.  You must pass the ELAR 4-8 #231 and the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 #160 Exams to earn the Texas Standard Teacher Certificate. Requires 15 semester credit hours in the content area.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE SUPPLEMENTAL AND 

CONTENT AREA EC-12

Teach All-Level ESL in a Content Area

This certification area qualifies you to teach English as Second Language, Grades EC-12.  This is not a stand-alone certificate but attaches to the base level of a content area certificate. You must pass the ESL EC-12 #154 and the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 #160 Exams to earn the Texas Standard Teacher Certificate.

MATH GRADES 4-8

Teach Mathematics

This certification area qualifies you to teach Mathematics, Grades 4-8.  You must pass the Math 4-8 #115 and the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 #160 Exams to earn the Texas Standard Teacher Certificate. Requires 12 semester credit hours in the content area.

MATH/SCIENCE GRADES 4-8

Teach Mathematics and Science

This certification area qualifies you to teach Mathematics and Science, Grades 4-8.  You must pass the Math/Science 4-8 #114 and the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 #160 Exams to earn the Texas Standard Teacher Certificate. Requires 12 semester credit hours in the content area.

MATH GRADES 7-12

Teach Mathematics

This certification area qualifies you to teach Mathematics, Grades 7-12.  You must pass the Math 7-12 #235 and the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 #160 Exams to earn the Texas Standard Teacher Certificate. Requires 15 semester credit hours in the content area.

SCIENCE GRADES 4-8

Teach Science

This certification area qualifies you to teach Science, Grades 4-8.  You must pass the Science 4-8 #116 and the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 #160 Exams to earn the Texas Standard Teacher Certificate. Requires 12 semester credit hours in the content area.

SCIENCE GRADES 7-12

Teach Science

This certification area qualifies you to teach Science, Grades 7-12.  You must pass the Science 7-12 #236 and the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 #160 Exams to earn the Texas Standard Teacher Certificate. Requires 15 semester credit hours in the content area.

SOCIAL STUDIES GRADES 4-8

Teach Social Studies

This certification area qualifies you to teach Social Studies, Grades 4-8.  You must pass the Social Studies 4-8 #118 and the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 #160 Exams to earn the Texas Standard Teacher Certificate. Requires 12 semester credit hours in the content area.

SPECIAL EDUCATION GRADES EC-12

Teach Special Education

This certification area qualifies you to teach Special Education, Grades EC-12.  You must pass the Special Education EC-12 #161 and the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 #160 Exams to earn the Texas Standard Teacher Certificate.

BILINGUAL SUPPLEMENTAL AND CORE SUBJECTS GRADES

EC-6 

Teach Bilingual Education


This certification area qualifies you to teach Bilingual Education. This is not a stand-alone certificate but attaches to a content area certificate. You must pass the Core Subjects #391, Science of Teaching Reading #293Bilingual Supplemental #164 and Bilingual Target Language Proficiency Test - Spanish #190, Core Subjects EC-6 #391, STR #293, and the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 #160 Exams to earn the Texas Standard Teacher Certificate.

JROTC GRADES 6-12

Teach JROTC

This certification area qualifies you to teach JROTC, Grades 6-12. Testing is not required. You must pass the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities EC-12 #160 Exam to earn the Texas Standard Teacher Certificate. We value the United States Military. The total program fee to earn JROTC 6-12 certification is $250!
